Big News for Hefei Expats: S1 Airport Line Moves One Step Closer to Operation

On August 22, Hefei’s long-awaited Xinqiao Airport S1 Metro Line reached a major milestone. The very first train has passed its single-train certification and is now running dynamic tests on the main line — a crucial step toward opening the city’s first direct metro link to Hefei Xinqiao International Airport.
The S1 Line stretches 47.5 km in an L-shape, connecting Shouxian, Gangji, downtown Hefei, Hefei West Railway Station, and the airport. With a top speed of 120 km/h, it’s designed as both a regional express line and an airport express line — meaning faster, smoother trips across the city and to your flight.
Unlike traditional metro systems, the S1 Line is equipped with cutting-edge “train-to-train” communication technology (TACS). In simple terms, the trains can “talk” to each other and run more autonomously, making the system smarter, safer, and more reliable.
What’s next? Engineers will continue with system testing and trial runs without passengers before the official launch. Once in full operation, the line will link directly with Metro Line 2, giving expats and locals alike a seamless way to reach both the airport and Hefei’s new West Railway Station — two key gateways for domestic and international travel.
For the international community in Hefei, this is more than just a new metro line. It’s about shorter travel times, easier airport access, and a clear sign that the city is rapidly growing into a modern, well-connected hub in the Yangtze River Delta.
Stay tuned — your next trip abroad from Hefei might soon start with a quick metro ride to the airport.
